Ukraine's Birch Sap Harvest: A Guide to Legal Collection and Avoiding Fines.
Understanding Ukraine's Birch Sap Harvesting Season
According to Novyny.live: With the arrival of spring, the birch sap harvesting season begins in Ukraine. This activity is classified as a secondary forest use, meaning it is only permitted under specific legal conditions. To collect sap legally, one must first obtain a forest ticket, as improper collection can result in significant fines. This traditional practice is regulated to protect forest resources.
It is crucial to note that the right to general forest use, as defined in Article 66 of Ukraine's Forest Code, does not include the collection of tree sap. Therefore, harvesting birch sap without the proper permit is illegal and constitutes an administrative offense. The fine for illegal sap collection can reach up to 51 hryvnias.
Penalties for Violating Harvesting Regulations
Additionally, collecting birch sap within populated areas violates local green space maintenance rules. Separate fines are imposed for breaching community landscaping regulations:
- For private citizens – from 340 UAH to 1,360 UAH;
- For officials and entrepreneurs – from 850 UAH to 1,700 UAH.
Consequently, adhering to all legal requirements is essential to avoid these financial penalties during the birch sap harvest.
The birch sap season is significant for many Ukrainians, as the sap is valued for its purported health benefits. However, compliance with the law is critical not only to avoid fines but also to ensure the sustainability of forest ecosystems. Unregulated harvesting can cause environmental damage beyond the immediate financial repercussions for the collector.
