Bodycare's business downturn: new store closures

According to The Sun: Discount hunters are rushing to beauty stores across Great Britain while they are still open. Bodycare has announced the closure of another 30 stores, adding to the already closed 32.

Brand administrators reported that the lack of goods and high maintenance costs of the stores in city centers have significantly complicated the situation, making it impossible to maintain the remaining 115 stores. The closed stores have already announced sales with discounts of up to 50%. Some shoppers even reported discounts of up to 75% off the original price.

One shopper shared that they purchased many inexpensive items for gifts. However, discounts vary: in some stores, cosmetics are discounted by 50%, while others offer only a 20% discount on other products.

After the latest closures, the chain will remain with 85 stores. The following stores will close in the coming days:

  • Dudley, West Midlands
  • Dunfermline, Scotland
  • Hanley, Staffordshire
  • Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire
  • Hyde, Greater Manchester
  • Ilford, Greater London
  • Ipswich, Suffolk
  • Morpeth, Northumberland
  • Newark, Nottinghamshire
  • Northallerton, North Yorkshire
  • Ormskirk, Lancashire
  • Redcar, North Yorkshire
  • Rochdale, Greater Manchester
  • Shrewsbury, Shropshire
  • St Helens, Merseyside
  • Workington, Cumbria

These closures occurred after the following stores were closed on Tuesday:

  • Bolton, Greater Manchester
  • Bromsgrove, Worcestershire
  • Castleford, West Yorkshire
  • Chesterfield, Derbyshire
  • Doncaster, South Yorkshire
  • Greenock, Scotland
  • Mansfield, Nottinghamshire
  • Salford, Greater Manchester
  • Skipton, North Yorkshire
  • Stevenage, Hertfordshire
  • Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire
  • Thornaby, North Yorkshire
  • Ulverston, Cumbria
  • Whitehaven, Cumbria

Bodycare appointed administrators from Interpath on September 5, facing rising costs and a lack of funding. This negatively affected relationships with suppliers and led to a shortage of goods. At that time, the closure of 32 stores had already been announced, resulting in the layoff of about 450 employees.

“We would like to sincerely thank the hundreds of dedicated Bodycare employees who demonstrated high professionalism since our appointment,” said Nick Holloway, Managing Director of Interpath and joint administrator.

“We will continue to operate in the remaining 85 stores while we remain in negotiations with stakeholders to preserve as much of the business as possible.”

Interpath is currently seeking opportunities to sell the business and its assets. The company noted that several parties have expressed interest in the stores.

Bodycare was founded in 1970 in Lancashire, selling beauty products, perfumes, and other bathroom items. Like many retailers, the company is facing challenges due to rising costs and decreasing consumer purchasing power.

Earlier in the administrative process, some stores had already begun discount sales or closed entirely. Retail locations across Great Britain, including Wrexham, Beverley, Morecambe, and Yorkshire, were closed earlier this month.

Here are the addresses of Bodycare stores that have already closed:

  • Beverley
  • Cameron Toll
  • Cannock
  • Clydebank
  • Cramlington
  • Croydon
  • Darwen
  • Dumfries
  • Edinburgh
  • Erdington
  • Falkirk
  • Hemel Hempstead
  • Kirkcaldy
  • Loughborough
  • Lytham St Annes
  • Macclesfield
  • Maidstone
  • Morecambe
  • Newport
  • Northfield
  • Paisley
  • Parkhead
  • Perth
  • Port Talbot
  • Rhyl
  • Royton
  • Scunthorpe
  • Stourbridge
  • Tamworth
  • West Bromwich

The decline of Bodycare's business reflects broader economic trends in British retail, where many companies find it increasingly difficult to maintain profitability. Store closures not only reduce opportunities for customers to obtain products but also lead to job losses in an industry facing intense competition.
