EU Must Immediately Adopt 20th Sanctions Package, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Urges, Targeting Russia’s Shadow Fleet.
Push for Tougher Sanctions Against Russia
According to UATV: Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has called on the European Union to ramp up sanctions against Russia, with a particular focus on its shadow fleet. He stressed the urgent need for the adoption of the 20th sanctions package. According to Sybiha,
‘The 20th sanctions package must be approved without delay.’
A key element in countering Russian aggression is tightening oversight of the shadow fleet’s activities. Recently, on March 1, Belgian military forces, with support from France, seized the tanker Ethera. This incident highlights international efforts to crack down on violations tied to the transport of Russian resources. Less than a week later, on March 6, the Swedish Coast Guard detained the vessel Caffa, and on March 12, Sweden took control of another ship also linked to the shadow fleet. The tanker Sea Owl I was found to be operating under a false flag, further underscoring the need for stricter monitoring of such vessels.
Sanctions Effectiveness and Support for Ukraine
In the context of expanding sanctions, it is worth noting that existing measures have already halted one in every five tankers from Russia’s shadow fleet. This demonstrates the effectiveness of current restrictions, but additional steps are required to sustain pressure on Moscow. Belgian politician Bart De Wever remarked:
‘We must continue providing financial support to Ukraine, but we also need to increase pressure on Russia.’
The next EU leaders’ summit is scheduled for March 19, where discussions are expected to center on tightening sanctions. Meanwhile, Ukraine has received a 90 billion euro loan, reflecting continued international backing in its fight against Russian aggression. Another European politician, Theo Francken, emphasized:
‘Without its shadow fleet, Putin cannot wage war against peaceful Ukrainians.’
Given these developments, Andrii Sybiha’s calls for stronger sanctions appear fully justified. The situation demands urgent action to ensure peace and security in Ukraine and across Europe.
Pressure on Russia through sanctions is becoming increasingly critical, especially amid new challenges facing the international community. Cooperation among EU nations in monitoring the shadow fleet and limiting Russia’s capabilities could significantly influence the conflict’s trajectory. The EU summit on March 19 may mark a pivotal moment in forming a united front against aggression, while also demonstrating unwavering support for Ukraine in its struggle for independence.
