Operation 'Ashan': Ukrainian Forces Strike 12 Russian Tankers and an Oil Terminal in Major Blow.
Operation 'Ashan' and Its Impact
According to UATV: On July 9, 2023, units of Ukraine's Defense Forces successfully targeted key military and economic assets of the Russian Federation as part of a mission codenamed 'Ashan.' The operation resulted in strikes against 1,180 Russian targets, which experts say has significantly hampered the capabilities of Russian troops.
Among the targets hit in the Sea of Azov were:
- 12 tankers
- one tugboat
- one Russian dry cargo ship
Additionally, in Bataysk, Rostov Oblast, the 'Yug Rusi' oil terminal was struck, triggering a fire at the facility. In the Sorokino area of Luhansk Oblast, an ammunition depot was also hit, a move that could further degrade the operational effectiveness of Russian forces.
Strategic Importance of the Operation
The 'Ashan' operation holds major strategic weight, as it effectively halted a mechanized offensive by Russian troops for six months. These actions by Ukraine's Defense Forces underscore their ability to strike critical enemy assets, potentially altering the trajectory of the conflict.
The destruction of numerous Russian military targets and infrastructure during Operation 'Ashan' highlights the high level of training and coordination among Ukrainian units. Beyond depleting enemy resources, these strikes also deliver a psychological blow to the morale of Russian troops and society. Future developments could significantly shape the course of the war and the strategies of both sides moving forward.
