The mistake that causes mold to appear at home: how to avoid it in autumn.
Possible causes of mold in your home
According to The Sun: Mold can appear in your home due to one common mistake that leads to condensation. Experts share tips on how to avoid this phenomenon and stop the growth of mold in the house during autumn.

Dale Smith, founder of Fence Guru, noted:
“Most people are unaware that their well-meaning autumn habits can actually create ideal conditions for mold growth.”
This is due to a combination of increased humidity and reduced air circulation in the cold months. Smith emphasized:
“We need to be especially careful about how we manage our homes during this transitional period.”
Habits that exacerbate the problem
Common actions, such as leaving umbrellas and boots to dry in the hallway, can worsen the situation.
The moisture brought in by these items creates a 'nest' for mold, especially if they are left in enclosed spaces or drying corridors, forming areas with heightened humidity.
Smith added:
“I have seen mold problems start in the hallways where families constantly leave their items.”
“Mold spreads further around the house through air circulation.”
A simple solution for combating mold
One simple solution may be to create designated drying areas in the house with good ventilation.
Additionally, experts from Bassingstoke and Dean Borg Council offer several helpful tips:
- Always wipe surfaces where moisture accumulates.
- Cover pots while cooking.
- Keep kitchen and bathroom doors closed while in use to avoid spreading moisture.
- Use exhaust fans in the kitchen and bathroom, if available, and/or open windows while using these spaces.
- Dry clothes outside (if possible), do not dry directly on radiators.
- Dry laundry in the bathroom with the door closed and the window open or the fan on.
There are also other reasons for the appearance of mold and moisture, such as rising damp, leaking gutters, and drips from pipes. Also, helpful habits to prevent condensation are described in The Sun.
One great hack is to open windows on opposite sides of the house. This can be done once or twice a day for a few minutes, at specific times, instead of letting cold air in all day.
When dealing with mold, it is important to act quickly. Olivia Young, a product development scientist at Astonish, said:
“Try to avoid contact with it as much as possible.”
“So, wear gloves, tie back your hair and start working to remove any signs of mold as soon as you notice them.”
Paying attention to proper ventilation and damp items can significantly reduce the risk of mold appearing in your home. Simple preventative measures can protect your home from potential problems that, besides their unattractive appearance, can also cause health issues. Keep an eye on the humidity in your space to ensure comfortable and safe living conditions.
