Building a Fourth Tier of Air Defense

According to Espreso.tv: Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief, Oleksandr Syrskyi, has announced the development of a fourth echelon of air defense and disclosed the performance of Ukrainian interceptor drones, which destroyed a substantial number of enemy UAVs in May. According to Syrskyi, establishing this new air defense layer will help protect two additional regions of the country. This update comes as Ukraine continues to face relentless aerial threats from Russian forces.

In May, Ukrainian helicopter crews eliminated over 440 Russian drones, while Ukrainian interceptor drones achieved impressive results by taking out more than 3,500 enemy unmanned aircraft. The second echelon of air defense also contributed significantly, destroying over 1,200 drones in just one month. Despite these successes, eight military units lost the authority to conduct basic combined arms training independently during May.

The Urgency of Building New Capabilities

Oleksandr Syrskyi: 'Work is ongoing to form the fourth air defense echelon, which will cover two more oblasts.'

He further emphasized that emerging challenges demand timely responses: 'This presents us with new challenges that require swift action.' To enhance military capabilities, the commander-in-chief noted that 'the Armed Forces of Ukraine are striving to scale up their own production of such components.'

Syrskyi added, 'I have set tasks for these and other directions moving forward,' underscoring the importance of continued efforts to strengthen the country’s defense. These developments highlight the Ukrainian military’s active countermeasures against aggression and the ongoing need to advance military technology and training.

The establishment of a fourth air defense echelon marks a critical step in bolstering Ukraine’s defensive posture, especially amid intensified hostile actions by Russian forces. Given the high rate at which Ukrainian troops are destroying enemy drones, it is clear the country is investing heavily in improving its air defense systems. These efforts aim not only to protect territory but also to sustain the morale of both soldiers and civilians during the protracted conflict.
