Sun Travel, in collaboration with Trainline, has prepared a selection of the best day trips to coastal towns this autumn, all easily accessible by train.
Margate, Kent
The coastal town of Margate is particularly popular in the summer. But a walk along the coast in autumn can also be wonderful – with picturesque colorful houses and cozy cafes.
The most popular beach is Margate Main Sands, where golden sand attracts families. Although good weather is not always guaranteed, you can still have fun without swimming.
In the town, the free art gallery Turner Contemporary often features significant exhibitions. There are also many vintage shops, arcades, and cozy cafes.

Exmouth, Devon
Exmouth attracts with its seaside walks and fresh wind. Families can also explore the beach in the cooler months by simply putting on a few layers of clothing.
In nice weather, you can visit Ocean Exmouth on the promenade for bowling or soft play in the kids' club.

St Ives, Cornwall
St Ives is one of the most beautiful places in Cornwall. If you travel by train, you can enjoy the stunning views of the sea.
In the town, there are numerous galleries, shops, and tea rooms, as well as Tate St Ives, which features exhibitions with panoramic views of the beach.
St Ives can be reached by train, and from the station it’s only a 10-14 minute walk to the beach.
North Berwick, East Lothian
Just thirty minutes from Edinburgh, North Berwick is an easy coastal day trip destination that looks great in autumn. There are two main sandy beaches – Milsey Bay and West Beach.
Additionally, there is the private Seacliff Beach, which is fee-based. The main attraction is the ruins of Tantallon Castle.
