In the Odesa region, an official allowed the dumping of hazardous waste at a landfill, which led to significant environmental damage. However, he was exposed, and a criminal case was opened, reports the Odesa regional prosecutor's office.
Details of the case
An official from one of the village councils allowed a maritime agency company to dump hazardous liquid substances at the landfill without the necessary licenses and environmental impact assessment. These liquids contained a high concentration of petroleum products and were formed as a result of washing the holds of oil-laden ships. They were illegally exported from the port and transported to the landfill for further disposal. According to the environmental inspection estimates, the damage to the environment exceeds 23 million UAH.
What punishment is looming
The subject of the case has been informed of suspicion for violating environmental safety rules, which can lead to serious consequences. According to these articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, he faces a prison sentence of 5 to 10 years.
It should be noted that recently a deputy who organized this scheme, as well as a military officer in Odesa region, was detained.
