How many Ukrainians agree to join NATO without occupied territories: a survey.
Ukrainians support joining NATO even with occupied territories
According to a survey, 47% of Ukrainians are willing to agree to Ukraine's accession to NATO even if part of the country's territories remains under Russian occupation. This information is confirmed by the 'Democratic Initiatives' foundation named after Ilko Kucheriv in cooperation with the Razumkov Center.
The survey data shows that disapproval of the scenario of joining NATO with occupied territories was voiced more frequently by respondents older than 50 years (40%), those living in eastern (36%), central (38%), and southern (48%) regions, individuals in poverty (46%), as well as those with relatives in temporarily occupied territories (42%).
The majority of respondents (55%) believe that joining NATO is the best option for ensuring security for Ukraine. 12% answered that a neutral status with international guarantees is the optimal choice.
In December 2024, 47% of respondents expressed willingness to support Ukraine's accession to NATO with occupied territories. This figure is 14% higher than in June 2023.
On the other hand, 36% of respondents disagreed with such a scenario, which is 16 percentage points lower compared to June 2023.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Ukraine will never recognize the occupation of its territories by Russia and will not agree to NATO membership only for part of its territory. The president also emphasized this at a joint press conference with the President of the European Council Charles Michel in Kyiv.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz ruled out the possibility of inviting Ukraine to NATO, which is the first step of the 'victory plan'. He stated that this issue is not a priority.
