French Rail Giant SNCF Bans Children Under 12 from New First-Class 'Optimum' Carriages.
SNCF's New Child-Free Zone on TGV Trains
According to Novyny.live: France's national railway operator, SNCF, has sparked public controversy with a new policy. It will prohibit children under the age of 12 from traveling in a designated first-class carriage on its high-speed TGV trains. This ban applies specifically to a new premium service named 'Optimum,' which is designed to offer a maximum level of comfort and tranquility during journeys.
The restriction is limited to weekdays and affects only 8% of seats on TGV trains. The remaining 92% of seats, including all other first and second-class accommodations, remain fully accessible to families. Furthermore, the ban is lifted on weekends, when all seats are open to children. Jean-Pierre Farandou, the CEO of the SNCF group, emphasized that the exclusive comfort of the Optimum carriage is intended to preserve privacy for passengers traveling for business or leisure.
'To ensure maximum comfort in this dedicated space, children are not permitted' - Jean-Pierre Farandou, CEO of the SNCF group.
The announcement has provoked anger among some parents. Sarah El Haïry, one critic of the policy, called it shocking and stressed that 'traveling with children is not a problem to be solved, but a reality to be supported.' The move by SNCF continues to generate debate among passengers and transport industry observers.
Potential Impact on Family Travel in France
This child-free policy in first class could represent a significant shift in passenger service standards for French railways. While SNCF aims to create optimal conditions for a specific category of traveler, criticism from parents highlights potential negative consequences for family trips. This move may signal a broader industry trend where comfort and privacy are increasingly prioritized by transport providers, sometimes at the expense of inclusivity.
