How a New U.S.-Israeli Campaign Against Iran Could Reshape the Ukraine War.
U.S. and Israel Launch Military Action Against Iran
According to UATV: On February 28, 2023, the United States and Israel initiated a military campaign against Iran, codenamed 'Epic Fury.' The operation's stated objectives are to dismantle Iran's missile arsenal and disrupt the activities of terrorist groups it supports, which are seen as threats to regional and global security. Tehran responded by launching strikes against U.S. bases in the Middle East. This development has significant global implications, particularly for the war in Ukraine, where Iran has been a key supplier of drones and other weaponry to Russia.
The Iran-Russia Military Partnership
Military cooperation between Tehran and Moscow has been a major concern for Ukraine. As far back as July 2022, Iran was planning to supply Russia with 300 drones. On October 21, 2022, Ukraine's Security Service opened a criminal investigation into these Iranian drone shipments, and Iran formally acknowledged transferring drones to Russia on November 5, 2022. By May 2023, U.S. intelligence identified new evidence of ongoing Iranian weapons shipments to Russia, confirming the durability of this military alliance.
Since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion, over 57,000 'Shahed' drones, known to be supplied by Iran, have been deployed. On October 16, 2022, The Washington Post reported Moscow's desire to acquire Iranian 'Fateh-110' and 'Zolfaghar' missiles. A meeting between Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and his Iranian counterpart on September 19, 2023, further signaled a deepening of military ties. This partnership directly impacts the battlefield in Eastern Europe, providing Russia with crucial asymmetric capabilities.
The 'Fateh-110' missiles have a range of 300 km and can carry a warhead weighing up to 650 kg, while the 'Zolfaghar' missiles can strike targets up to 700 km away with a 580 kg warhead. Iran is estimated to possess over 3,000 ballistic missiles of various types, representing a substantial threat portfolio that extends beyond the Middle East.
As Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted, 'Iran has provided other weapons to Russia as well.'
Given these developments, the new U.S.-Israeli military action against Iran could significantly influence the course of the war in Ukraine by potentially disrupting a critical supply line for the Russian military. This situation demands close attention from the international community and may lead to new phases in the global geopolitical landscape.
Operation 'Epic Fury' underscores escalating tensions in the Middle East with serious potential repercussions for worldwide security. The military collaboration between Iran and Russia, especially involving drones and missiles, highlights threats emanating from Tehran that could destabilize not only Ukraine but other regions. A coordinated international response is essential to prevent further escalation of these interconnected conflicts.
