A New Name for a Kyiv Metro Station: 'Zvirynetska' Replaces 'Friendship of Peoples'.
Kyiv Metro Station Renamed from 'Friendship of Peoples' to 'Zvirynetska'
According to Novyny.live: In a move reflecting local heritage, a Kyiv metro station has been officially renamed. The station formerly known as 'Friendship of Peoples' is now called 'Zvirynetska,' following a city council decision on May 18, 2023. This change was driven by a public survey conducted in January 2023, where 76% of respondents supported adopting the historical name of the area, Zvirynets.
As the 32nd station on the Kyiv Metro system, 'Zvirynetska' first opened its doors on December 30, 1991. It is situated between the 'Vydubychi' and 'Pecherska' stations. Interestingly, the new name consists of 13 letters, with each individual letter weighing approximately 6 kilograms on the station's signage.
The Significance of the Renaming Effort
This renaming underscores the community's push to preserve historical and cultural legacy while also modernizing city infrastructure. The 'Zvirynetska' station is poised to become a key element in the metro's development, offering convenient access to important urban landmarks.
The move is part of a broader trend across Ukraine aimed at restoring historical place names and honoring cultural memory. Such changes can help boost national identity and civic pride among residents. At the same time, they highlight the active role of the public in shaping urban infrastructure and its evolution.
