Stephen King banned in US schools 206 times: who else is on the list.
According to Korrespondent.net: American author Stephen King has become the leader among writers whose works are most frequently subjected to bans in US educational institutions. This information is provided in a new report by PEN America, published by the Associated Press.
Data on bans
According to the research, King's books have faced censorship 206 times. Among his 87 publications, novels such as Carrie and The Stand made it to the banned list. The main reasons for removal were scenes of violence, explicit sexual content, and themes of LGBTQ+ and racial issues.
Total number of incidents
In the 2024–2025 school year, PEN recorded 6800 instances of temporary or permanent book removals. Although this figure is 10,000 fewer than the previous year, it still significantly exceeds previous years' statistics.
Most banned works
There is a significant demand for banning the novel A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess, which has been banned 23 times. The list also includes books by Patricia McCormick, Judy Blume, Jennifer Niven, Sarah J. Maas, and Jodi Picoult.
Geographical features of bans
It is worth noting that 80% of all bans are concentrated in three states — Florida, Texas, and Tennessee. In contrast, some other states, such as Illinois, Maryland, and New Jersey, have not recorded similar cases due to laws that restrict libraries' rights to remove books.
Recent news from the film industry
