Despite Treason Charges, Shufrych Returns to Parliamentary Committee Work.
The Case of Nestor Shufrych
According to Espreso.tv: Lawmaker Nestor Shufrych, facing accusations of high treason, has resumed participation in a parliamentary committee on freedom of speech. On September 20, 2023, the Verkhovna Rada removed him from his position as committee chair, and legal proceedings against him are ongoing. Shufrych attended the meeting remotely. The committee on freedom of speech consists of three members:
- Nestor Shufrych
- Yaroslav Yurchyshyn
- Yevheniy Brahary
Shufrych’s legal troubles have deepened since the treason allegations emerged. In March 2022, he was detained by territorial defense forces while allegedly trying to photograph a military checkpoint. On May 16, 2022, he left Ukraine through the 'Porubne' border crossing. He claimed to have returned on May 23, 2022. The situation escalated on September 15, 2023, when law enforcement searched his home.
The Verkhovna Rada’s decision on September 20, 2023, to remove him as committee chair underscores the gravity of the case. In February 2024, an additional charge was brought against him: financing the Russian National Guard in Crimea. On September 3, 2024, the case was submitted to court. In January 2025, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy imposed National Security and Defense Council sanctions on him.
Developments in the Case
In April 2026, a court changed Shufrych’s pretrial restriction to round-the-clock house arrest. During the committee meeting, Shufrych stated:
'I congratulate you on the fact that we are working at full strength.'
These events highlight the complex legal situation surrounding the lawmaker and the ongoing investigation.
The case of Nestor Shufrych continues to draw public attention, as his role in the Verkhovna Rada and legal standing remain uncertain. Following his removal as committee head and the multiple charges against him, his political future could see major shifts. Monitoring this case is crucial for understanding Ukraine’s political dynamics, especially amid the conflict with Russia and the fight against corruption.
