Poland-Ukraine Tensions Over UPA: Tusk Points Finger at Kyiv.
Ukraine and Poland Clash Over UPA Legacy
According to Espreso.tv: Relations between Ukraine and Poland have soured following remarks by Andrzej Szeptycki concerning fighters from the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). Szeptycki, the great-grandson of Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky’s brother, holds a position in the Polish government, lending weight to his statements. On May 26, 2023, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a decree granting the honorary designation 'named after the heroes of the UPA' to the Special Operations Center 'North.' This decision sparked outrage among Polish politicians.
On May 29, 2023, Polish President Karol Nawrocki announced plans to strip Zelenskyy of Poland’s highest state award. The political climate grew more tense when, on June 5, 2023, Donald Tusk stated that the responsibility for resolving the rift between Kyiv and Warsaw lies solely with Ukraine. Tusk stressed the importance of avoiding conflicts rooted in history, noting:
“If we quarrel over the past, someone else will win the future. The Ukrainian president must finally understand this. Poles, too. Before it’s too late.” — Donald Tusk
Criticism and Calls for Dialogue
Polish politicians also directed criticism at Szeptycki. Marcin Przydacz questioned why Szeptycki still holds his post in the Polish government after making such remarks. He commented:
“I’m talking about Mr. Szeptycki. What is this person still doing in the Polish government after a statement like that?” — Marcin Przydacz
Additionally, on June 8, 2023, Donald Tusk urged Zelenskyy and Nawrocki to engage in 'direct and honest' dialogue. This signals a desire among Polish leaders to find a way out of the conflict and improve communication between the two countries. The dispute over honoring the UPA and its impact on bilateral relations remains a pressing issue in Ukrainian-Polish ties.
The ongoing friction between Ukraine and Poland over UPA commemorations highlights the complex historical relationship between the two nations. It is crucial that politicians on both sides seek compromise, as disputes over historical grievances can damage current partnerships. Dialogue and transparency are essential for maintaining this alliance, especially given the pressing regional security challenges.
