Sweden Pledges $2.7 Billion and Gripen Jets to Ukraine: What the Deal Includes.
Sweden's Support Package for Ukraine
According to UATV: Sweden is providing Ukraine with a second loan guarantee worth €236 million, alongside a new $2.7 billion aid package that includes the procurement of Swedish Gripen fighter jets. These funds will be allocated to cover pensions, salaries, and support for internally displaced persons—a critical need given Ukraine's current economic challenges.
Agreement and Military Assistance
Under an agreement signed on May 28, 2026, Ukraine is set to receive 150 multirole Gripen aircraft. The first 16 jets are expected to arrive in Ukraine by early 2027, while 22 of the upgraded Gripen E variant are scheduled for delivery by 2030. The Gripen requires just 800 meters for takeoff and 600 meters for landing, making it well-suited for operations from diverse airfields.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy: 'These fighters are equipped with specific weaponry, including the Meteor missile, which can strike targets at distances exceeding 200 kilometers.'
He also expressed hope that 'within the next 10 months, we expect to receive the first Gripen aircraft.' Ulf Kristersson emphasized that 'Ukraine has clearly identified the Gripen as its preferred long-term option for its air force.'
Analysts believe the Gripen could become the backbone of Ukraine's air force, citing key advantages such as ease of maintenance and the ability to operate from short runways. It is also worth noting that over 90% of Ukraine's counter-ballistic threat capabilities come through the PURL initiative, highlighting the importance of international support in safeguarding national security.
This financial package and military assistance from Sweden underscore the growing international backing for Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict. The acquisition of Gripen jets will not only bolster Ukraine's defense capabilities but also open new avenues for modernizing its military aviation. A key component of this deal is the continued support for social programs, reflecting a comprehensive approach to addressing the challenges the country faces.
