Switzerland has actively undertaken the refurbishment of old bomb shelters.
Switzerland plans to modernize two hundred old bomb shelters and civil defense bunkers over the next 15 years. The reason for this is the deterioration of the security situation in the world. The project cost is estimated at 220 million francs ($254 million).
The Federal Government of Switzerland is submitting changes to the governmental "Civil Defense Ordinance" for review due to the growing threat to security.
The government plans to implement a large investment program for updating protective structures and command and control support points of the civil defense system. The budget for these purposes will be increased from 9 to 14-15 million francs per year, and the cantons will receive federal subsidies amounting to 880 million francs ($1.1 billion).
Switzerland joined the European Sky Shield initiative
Previously, Switzerland joined the Sky Shield initiative, which aims to create a single air and missile defense system across Europe. This system was created following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Sky Shield allows European countries to jointly purchase defense systems and conduct joint training on their use.
