Francis paid for his own burial… The Roman Catholic bishop spoke about the virtues of the late Francis.
Pope Francis planned modest funerals and paid for them himself
The head of the Kyiv-Zhytomyr diocese, Vitaly Kryvytskyi, said that Pope Francis was sincere and humble until the very end of his life. He even planned his own funeral, not leaving any expenses to the Church.
In his will, which the current Pope began to compose in 2022, Francis stated that he wanted to be buried in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. He paid for the costs of his burial himself and did not pass this on to the church.
Kryvytskyi emphasized that Francis was always a modest person. Even in the case of needing medical assistance, he refused free treatment and paid for everything himself.
Despite significant physical suffering in the last years of his life, Pope Francis dedicated his suffering to peace and harmony throughout the world, including Ukraine.
Francis passed away at the age of 88. The cause of his death was a stroke, as well as chronic diseases, bilateral pneumonia, and respiratory crises. According to his will, he was buried in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, where many people came to bid farewell to the Pope during his last family moments.
