Employment Challenges for Veterans in Lviv

According to Espreso.tv: Andriy Zholob, Deputy Mayor of Lviv, has raised concerns about the difficulties veterans face in finding work—particularly the low wages that discourage them from pursuing roles in local government. Zholob, who transitioned from a medical doctor to a unit commander, points out that veterans in the public sector earn between 10,000 and 12,000 hryvnias, a sum he considers far too modest given their experience and the hardships they have endured.

Zholob stresses the urgency of securing jobs for veterans while opportunities are still available. He stated:

“Now is the time to get employed, while the offers are still there.” — Andriy Zholob

However, he also warned that society’s current goodwill toward veterans—what he calls a 'honeymoon period'—will not last forever. He expressed frustration that many veterans are unwilling to accept such meager pay, especially after surviving the front lines. “I don’t know what kind of person you’d have to be, especially valuing the fact that you survived the war and came back, to want to work for 10–12 thousand hryvnias,” he added.

Urgent Need for Action

These issues demand immediate attention, as they affect not only the well-being of veterans but also the overall effectiveness of local governance.

The discussion around veteran employment in Lviv underscores the broader need for social support systems that help integrate those who have served in combat. Low salaries risk becoming a major barrier to their reintegration into civilian life and their participation in public administration—potentially undermining the efficiency of local authorities. It is critical that both the state and society address these challenges and seek solutions that allow veterans to contribute their skills and potential for the benefit of the community.
