Kyiv's Heating System Crippled: Missile Strikes Leave Half a Million Without Power.
Destruction of Kyiv's CHP Plant No. 4
According to TSN.ua: Kyiv's Combined Heat and Power Plant No. 4 (CHPP-4) has been destroyed following a winter-long campaign of attacks. The final assault, which involved ballistic missiles, inflicted severe damage on the energy infrastructure, cutting off heat for approximately 500,000 residents. Vice Prime Minister Oleksiy Kuleba showed the station's ruins to diplomats, highlighting the scale of Russian terror tactics. He specifically emphasized that
"these aren't just ballistic missiles; they are projectiles loaded with shrapnel".
International Response and Aid
Over the winter, CHPP-4 endured around 20 missile strikes, which critically degraded its functionality. Simultaneously, CHPP-6, which supplies heat to the Troieshchyna district, has also been effectively paralyzed. The German Ambassador to Ukraine stressed the importance of international assistance, noting that Germany has already supplied Ukraine with more than 30 mobile heating units to help compensate for the losses in energy infrastructure.
Diplomats who visited the destroyed CHPP-4 expressed their outrage and concern. Andreas Pildigovits, one of the diplomats, underscored that
"this must be investigated as war crimes by the Russian Federation. These are truly genocidal attacks against the civilian population". Kateryna Materynova, another member of the delegation, stated:
"It's very emotional. I saw the destroyed station, and now I see the impact of these attacks on ordinary people. It's hard, but Europe is ready to help".
The situation in Troieshchyna remains dire, with local residents suffering from the cold due to the lack of heating. To bolster the resilience of Ukraine's energy system, generators and equipment are arriving from Poland, the Czech Republic, France, and Italy, yet these measures are proving insufficient. Therefore, in addition to technical aid, experts point to the necessity of imposing new sanctions against the aggressor to prevent similar attacks in the future.
The destruction of CHPP-4 is a stark example of the extensive damage Ukraine's energy infrastructure has sustained due to military actions. The loss of heating for hundreds of thousands of people during winter conditions underscores the severe consequences of the aggression faced by the population. International support, including the provision of mobile heating units, is a crucial step in mitigating this crisis, but stabilizing the situation requires further efforts and new sanctions against the aggressor state. These attacks on civilian energy grids are a recognized tactic in Russia's war strategy, aiming to break civilian morale during the harsh winter months.
