Supercitizen in Australia killed two police officers: what is known about the sovereign citizens movement.
Shooting in Australia: two police officers killed
According to The Sun: Gunshots were heard in the rural area - a murder occurred during the execution of a warrant. In just a moment, two police officers were killed, one was hospitalized, and the suspect - self-proclaimed 'sovereign citizen' Desi Freeman - fled.
Supporter of sovereign citizenship Gavin Eugene Long killed six police officers in the USA in 2016
Constable Rachel McCrow was killed along with two other police officers by a sovereign citizens family in Australia
Self-proclaimed 'chief judge of England' Mark Christopher organized a kidnapping plan of a coroner in Essex
The police are actively searching for the 'traveler-killer' in Victoria, despite poor weather conditions. The 56-year-old fugitive joins a growing number of individuals who consider themselves sovereign citizens - members of an anti-government movement and conspiracy theorists.
These people believe that they can live according to their own laws without government intervention and have repeatedly demonstrated a willingness to kill or die for their goals.
Threat of sovereign citizens
Experts are concerned that the movement, which originated in the USA in the 1970s, may spread to other countries, including the United Kingdom.
Dr. William Olchorn from the American International University in London noted that there are two main active groups in the UK - sovereign citizens and a somewhat different 'free people' movement.
“These groups deny government authority, the legal system, and taxation,” he stated.
Research shows that thousands of people in the UK support these ideas, and there is already known collaboration between different groups.
Although there is currently no widespread violence in the UK, there is a risk of escalation, as evidenced by a recent case in Australia.
Recall that in 2022, spouses Gareth and Stacey Train along with Gareth's brother shot two constables in Queensland, which are also linked to the sovereign citizens movement.
This case is not the first time representatives of this movement commit violence against police officers, as similar incidents have also occurred in the USA.
These events once again highlight the seriousness of the threat posed by the sovereign citizens movement and raise concerns among law enforcement agencies worldwide. It is necessary to work on preventing such incidents to protect society from violence.
