President Donald Trump resolved cases related to the attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. According to CNN, he pardoned about 1,270 individuals who were convicted for their participation in these events. He also closed 300 unresolved cases and released 14 other defendants who were charged with serious conspiracies against the government. Many advisors and allies expected Trump's pardons to be limited to non-violent offenders, but the directive grants full pardons to approximately 600 individuals who attacked police officers or obstructed their work. All pardoned individuals who participated in the assault committed crimes against police stations, using dangerous weapons such as metal rods, fire extinguishers, and wooden boards. Trump also eased sentences for far-right extremists from the Oath Keepers and Proud Boys groups, but this does not mean full pardons. In addition, the directive instructs the U.S. Attorney General to close all unresolved cases that are pending in the courts.
