Trump Urges China to Press Putin as Ukraine-Russia Talks Hit a Deadlock.
Stalemate in Russia-Ukraine Negotiations
According to Espreso.tv: Negotiations between Russia and Ukraine have reached an impasse. In response, U.S. President Donald Trump has called on China to exert influence on Russian President Vladimir Putin to revive talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. China, which maintains a neutral stance yet retains close ties with Moscow, has previously attempted to facilitate peace efforts.
In February 2023, Beijing unveiled a 12-point peace plan aimed at charting a path to resolve the conflict. Later, in May 2024, China and Brazil jointly proposed a new peace initiative. Against this backdrop, on March 2, Zelenskyy expressed Ukraine’s interest in having China play a role in the peace process.
Trump’s Visit to China
Donald Trump arrived in Beijing on May 13, 2024, for a three-day state visit—his first trip to China since 2017. On May 14, 2024, he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in the capital. During the meeting, Xi stressed the importance of bilateral partnership, stating:
“Countries should be partners,” Xi Jinping said.
The deadlock in Russia-Ukraine talks remains tense despite international efforts. China’s active push to act as a mediator signals Beijing’s ambition to expand its global influence. Meanwhile, the U.S. position, highlighted by Trump’s appeals, underscores the need for coordinated international action to achieve peace in the region.
