Trump appoints special envoy to Greenland: Denmark and the island reject annexation

According to ТСН: US President Donald Trump has once again emphasized the importance of Greenland for the national security of the United States and announced the appointment of a special envoy to address issues concerning this Arctic island.

On Sunday, Trump appointed Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as the US special representative to Greenland. This move has sparked negative reactions from Denmark and the Greenlandic authorities, who emphasized that the island cannot be subject to annexation.

President's Statements

At a press conference in Palm Beach (Florida), Trump noted that the interest of the United States in Greenland is not related to natural resources, but to security issues. He emphasized that there is activity from Russian and Chinese vessels in the waters around the island, which poses a threat.

"We need Greenland for national security. It's not about minerals. We're seeing Russian and Chinese ships all along the coast," said the American leader.

This is not the first time Trump has expressed a desire to annex Greenland, which is an autonomous territory of Denmark, to the US. Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry supports this idea. In a post on social media X, he thanked Trump for the appointment and noted that it is a "great honor" for him, emphasizing that it will not affect his position as governor.

Reactions from Denmark and Greenland

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland's Premier Jens-Frederik Nielsen emphasized in a joint statement that the future of the island should be determined by the Greenlanders themselves.

"It is impossible to annex another country, even under the guise of arguments related to international security," they emphasized.

Moreover, the Trump administration has increased pressure on Copenhagen by suspending licenses for five major offshore wind farm projects off the eastern coast of the United States, among which are two projects being implemented by the Danish company Orsted.

Earlier, Trump also expressed the view that Denmark is not adequately providing for the defense of Greenland and that the island has too small a population for self-defense.

The discussion regarding the status of Greenland highlights the escalation of global geopolitical interests in the Arctic. The shifting power dynamics in the region raises concerns and underscores the importance of international cooperation, especially in the context of ensuring security and maintaining territorial integrity. Not only the US but also other countries with interests in the Arctic must respond to these changes.
