Army Overhaul: New Contracts, Defined Service Periods, and a Pathway Back from AWOL.
Ukraine Overhauls Military Service System
According to Espreso.tv: Ukraine has launched a sweeping reform of its military service framework, introducing fresh contract options, fixed service durations, increased financial compensation, and a formal process for soldiers to return from absent without leave (AWOL) status. The Defense Minister stated:
“We are undertaking a comprehensive transformation of the military service system, which includes new contracts, clear service timelines, higher payouts, and greater fairness for service members.”
Service members who went AWOL can now return to duty via the Army+ digital platform, a process available until September 20, 2026. However, the unauthorized absence must have been officially recorded by June 12. The Defense Ministry also announced that the longest-serving troops will begin to be discharged from the army later this year. In June, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy ordered new additional payments for military personnel.
Stages for Returning to Service
The return process involves several steps:
- undergo a verification check;
- navigate to Services → Reports → 'Return to Service After AWOL';
- select a new military unit;
- sign the report online;
- receive an 'In Transit' status, allowing 5 days to report to the new duty station.
These changes aim to improve service conditions and strengthen social guarantees for Ukraine’s military personnel.
The reforms are part of the government’s broader effort to enhance support for troops, including financial aid and social protections. This overhaul is expected to boost army morale and stability within military structures, especially amid the ongoing conflict. The introduction of a streamlined return mechanism also reflects the Defense Ministry’s commitment to adapting to soldiers’ needs and offering greater flexibility in service.
