Three Scenarios for Ending the War in Ukraine After Trump and Putin's Conversation: Bloomberg Version.
Bloomberg analysts have provided three possible scenarios for ending the war between Russia and Ukraine. The agency's article, dedicated to the conversations between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin, describes these scenarios.
Despite Trump's confidence, it is unclear whether a peace agreement can be reached, as Putin shows no signs of compromise, notes Bloomberg. However, the agency believes that 'broad outlines' of a resolution to the situation in Ukraine are already visible. Here is how analysts see them:
Basic (Most Likely) Scenario
According to analysts, in the near future, the territories of Ukraine annexed by Russia will remain in a 'suspended state' and under the control of the Russian Federation. Certain territorial exchanges are possible, particularly the inclusion of part of the occupied Kursk region by the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Ukraine will obtain certain security guarantees, and the main part of the negotiations will be about the strength of these guarantees. The fulfillment of obligations under these guarantees will depend on the decisions of future political leaders. Europe may convince the United States to support Ukraine while it builds its own capabilities in this direction.
Best Scenario
The U.S. and European countries will promise to intervene in case Russia violates the terms of the peace agreement. But even supporters of Ukraine are concerned about the threat of direct conflict with the Russian Federation.
Ukraine may receive more military assistance from its allies, impose or strengthen sanctions against Russia, assist in the development of the Ukrainian military-industrial complex, and reform the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This scenario could open the way for Ukraine to join the European Union within 10 years.
Worst Scenario
Trump may lose interest in Ukraine before any agreement is reached and stop assistance, leaving Europe to resolve the issues on its own.
Even if the conversations between Trump and Putin lead to a peace agreement, it could delay the next phase of the war between NATO and Russia.
An agreement would preserve Ukraine's sovereignty and open the path for its accession to the European Union. However, it could also further entrench Putin's control over part of Ukrainian territory and undermine membership in NATO.
It should be noted that Trump had a phone conversation with Putin, where they discussed Ukraine and the Middle East. Russian media reported this, stating that the conversation lasted an hour and a half, and that Trump was invited to Moscow.
It is also worth noting that key American allies in Europe were not warned about the talks between Trump and Putin. Bloomberg reported this, citing European officials.
