Participants Share Their Stories
One competitor, Viacheslav Kutin, suffered severe injuries on the Zaporizhzhia front. He spent 13 months in captivity before being exchanged in January 2025. Viacheslav recounted his experience:
“I spent eight days lying in a trench without one of my limbs. Then I was taken prisoner, where I remained for 13 months. In January 2025, there was a 25-for-25 exchange for the repatriation of the seriously wounded, and I was part of that swap.” - Viacheslav Kutin
He participated actively in all events, aiming to prove to himself and his son that a double amputation is not a life sentence: “I try to take part in as many competitions as possible, to prove first and foremost to myself and my son that a double amputation is not a verdict, and that I can achieve worthy results in any sport.”
Another participant, Vladyslav, who was wounded in the Donetsk region, highlighted the vital importance of camaraderie at such events: “First and foremost, it’s about connection. I know there were situations at the start of the war when people with amputations thought, ‘That’s it, society doesn’t need us anymore.’ Here, it’s the opposite.”
Beyond the physical competition, the tournament plays a crucial role in the psychological and emotional recovery of veterans. Dmytro Matveiev emphasized the role of sport in rehabilitation: “Sport is the number one priority for recovery after returning. Because, first of all, it’s psycho-emotional recovery, it’s a fight against post-traumatic stress. A person may have no visible wounds, but inside they are wounded.”
The Dnipro tournament served as a significant event for veterans and military personnel, underscoring their determination to recover and lead active lives after injury. Such adaptive sports events are becoming increasingly common in Ukraine as part of a broader effort to support veterans' reintegration. They not only boost participants' morale but also foster a supportive community where veterans can share experiences and support one another. The tournament sends a powerful message to society about the necessity of integrating service members who face physical and psychological challenges back into active community life.
