Finland to Trial World's Longest Trams: 50-Meter Vehicles Coming to Tampere.
Tampere to Test New Generation of Trams
According to Novyny.live: In the summer of 2026, the Finnish city of Tampere will begin testing 50-meter-long trams as part of an expansion of its light rail network. These new vehicles will be among the longest in the world, significantly boosting passenger capacity. The increase from the current 37-meter vehicles to 50-meter models will provide approximately 25% more space for riders.
Project Details and Fleet Expansion
The new, longer tram sets will be trialed on the Pirkkala–Linnainmaa section, a route that requires greater capacity to serve its passengers. Tampere currently operates a fleet of 28 trams, each 37 meters long. The first extended vehicle will enter service in summer 2026, with the city's tram fleet expected to include the following by summer 2028:
- 19 vehicles measuring 50 meters
- 16 standard 37-meter vehicles
For context, the current world's longest tram is the ForCity Smart 38T, measuring between 58.7 and 60 meters. This tram, which can carry up to 368 passengers, has been in operation in Germany's Rhine-Neckar region since 2025. Tampere's adoption of these very long trams highlights the city's commitment to modernizing and improving its public transit system.
The tram network expansion in Tampere is part of a broader strategy to upgrade public transport infrastructure and meet growing passenger demand. The introduction of some of the world's longest trams underscores local authorities' efforts to provide efficient and comfortable transport for residents and visitors alike. This ambitious project could serve as a model for other cities looking to modernize their own public transportation systems.
