Bone marrow transplant performed on soldier in Lviv: his brother was the donor.
For the first time in Lviv, an adult donor bone marrow transplant was performed. This was reported by the Minister of Health Viktor Lyashko. The patient was 34-year-old Serhiy Marytsan from Transcarpathia, who fought against Russian aggression.
Four months ago, Serhiy began to feel unwell and consulted doctors. It turned out that he was suffering from aplastic anemia, when the bone marrow stops producing blood cells. The only way to save him was a bone marrow transplant, and the donor was his brother Yury.
'The day after the stem cells were collected, the transplant was performed. Serhiy is spending time in a special bone marrow transplant department, and today he will go outside for the first time and hug his wife,' Viktor Lyashko said. He also added that before this, such operations were only performed in Kyiv and Cherkasy.
It was previously reported that a former deputy head of the Ministry of Health and 10 doctors were detained for violating the law on organ transplantation. Also, in Ukraine, for the first time, a liver was divided into two parts and transplanted to two patients.
