World's Longest Urban Cable Car Takes Shape in Mexico's Capital
According to Novyny.live: Construction has commenced in Mexico City on what will become the world's longest urban cable car network, a major initiative designed to alleviate the city's notorious traffic congestion. This ambitious system will link 53 districts across the sprawling metropolis with a total network length exceeding 50 kilometers. Comprising 642 cabins, the cable car will have the capacity to transport approximately 3,000 passengers every hour, offering a new aerial transit option.
Project Specifications and Timeline
The new line, designated Line 5, will stretch 15.2 kilometers and feature twelve stations. Ground was broken on the project in November 2025, with an expected public opening slated for 2028. The total investment amounts to 7.9 billion Mexican pesos, roughly equivalent to 372 million euros. A single ride is priced at 7 pesos, with complimentary access granted to children under five and adults aged 60 and over, promoting social inclusion.
This infrastructure project aims to modernize transit for the Mexico City metropolitan area, home to over 20 million residents. The construction contract has been awarded to Doppelmayr, a global leader with extensive experience installing cable transport systems worldwide.
