Heating season in Ukraine: why the start differs in cities

According to inkorr.com: In Ukraine, no decision has yet been made regarding the start of the heating season, which depends on weather conditions and the readiness of each community. This was stated in a comment to Novyny.LIVE by the head of the parliamentary committee on energy issues, Andriy Gerus.

Lack of a universal start date

Gerus noted that there is no single date for the start of the heating season since climatic conditions differ in various regions.

“There is no such thing as the heating season starting simultaneously for Sumy, Kyiv, and Odesa. These cities may have different temperatures, so someone may start earlier. The final decision is made by the city mayor,” he added.

Formal guidelines for the start of the heating season

A guideline for the start of heat supply is the average daily temperature dropping below +8°C for three consecutive days. Additionally, local authorities must consider their technical readiness to launch:

  • signing contracts for gas supply;

  • preparation of heating networks;

  • ensuring sufficient thermal energy supply.

Gerus emphasized that a decentralized approach allows for quicker responses to changes in weather.

“In each city, the heating season may start on different days. It is logical and correct that Kyiv and Odesa can start on different dates,” said the deputy.

In Ukraine, preparations for the cold are in full swing: local authorities are conducting hydraulic tests, repairing networks, and accumulating gas in storage. The first boiler may start operating in the second half of October or early November, depending on the temperature.

Currently, it is crucial for communities to be ready for the upcoming heating season, as timely preparation will help avoid problems with heat supply in residents' homes. Each local authority must be responsive to weather changes and react accordingly, as comfort in homes is a strategic priority.
