Russia accuses the US of piracy: why did the Kremlin send the fleet to cover the tanker.
According to ТСН: The Russian authorities reacted sharply to the detention of the tanker 'Marinera' by American forces, calling the US actions a violation of international law. The head of the Federation Council's Committee on State Construction Andrey Klishas characterized this incident as 'open piracy.'
'Everything is according to the infamous 'rules' in violation of the norms of international law,' Klishas stated.
What is known about the capture of the tanker?
At the end of December, the US Coast Guard attempted to intercept the Bella 1 vessel in the Caribbean Sea, which was heading to Venezuela for oil. However, the sanctioned tanker displayed the tricolor flag of the Russian Federation and forced the American fleet to retreat.
According to information from the New York Times, Russia asked the US not to touch this tanker.
It later became known that the Kremlin sent a military fleet to protect its tanker from the Americans.
Despite this, the US still conducted an operation to seize the tanker Marinera, which was sailing under the Russian flag.
An American official confirmed to NBC News that the oil tanker Marinera was taken under control and is currently in US custody. According to him, the operation was led by the Department of Homeland Security with the support of military personnel.
This incident reflects the escalation of tensions between Moscow and Washington amid the ongoing global conflict. The detention of the tanker may have serious consequences for international relations and for oil supplies from Venezuela, which have become an important element in the strategic plans of both countries.
