Helion Energy is building a nuclear power plant for Microsoft: project details.
The American company Helion Energy from Washington has started building a nuclear facility in Chelan County, Oregon. The project, named Orion, aims to begin producing affordable and environmentally friendly electricity by 2028, using fuel derived from water.
The choice of Chelan County was due to its energy infrastructure and convenient connection to the main power grids of the region. Orion is expected to supply energy to Microsoft’s data centers located nearby.
'Today is an important day not only for Helion but for the entire nuclear energy industry - we are opening a new era of energy independence,' said Helion co-founder and CEO David Kirtley.
The company aims to produce zero-carbon electricity from water fuel. Their previous prototype, Trenta, was the first in the private sector to reach fuel temperatures of 100 million degrees Celsius - the necessary level for commercial nuclear reactions.
In 2023, Microsoft and Helion signed a power purchase agreement from nuclear sources, with Constellation Energy becoming the official energy trader. Recently, China launched the world’s largest pumped-storage power station.
