New technology can eavesdrop on phone conversations: how to protect yourself
Researchers from Penn State University have developed a technology that, using millimeter wave radar and artificial intelligence, can eavesdrop on phone conversations from a distance of up to 3 meters, reports Interesting Engineering.

The system can recognize and transcribe conversations with 60% accuracy by analyzing weak vibrations from the phone during calls. The research is based on the Whisper speech recognition model, which has been retrained on radar data, improving the quality of speech recognition even in noisy and low-quality data.

The radar was installed about three meters away from the phone, and the artificial intelligence could recognize up to 10,000 words. Meanwhile, the researchers compare this technology to lip reading, which helps understand the essence of the conversation.

Although this technology could pose a threat to privacy, as it can be used for remote eavesdropping on personal conversations without the user's knowledge, the researchers emphasize the need to create protective measures against such spying.

The study is supported by the National Science Foundation of the USA, and the team plans to continue working on protecting personal information from emerging technological threats.

In the European Union, new mandatory requirements for artificial intelligence providers came into force on August 2, aimed at increasing transparency, safety, and accountability.

The enhanced requirements are related to the desire to ensure a high level of personal data protection and make the artificial intelligence market more transparent and accountable. This initiative responds to general outrage regarding data protection and transparency in the operations of artificial intelligence algorithms in the EU.
