4700-Kilogram Tyrannosaur Ancestor Unearthed in the United States.
Discovery of Tyrannosaur Ancestor Remains
According to TSN.ua: In the United States, archaeologists have uncovered the fossilized remains of a tyrannosaur ancestor estimated to be 74 million years old. This find is significant because it is considered the largest tyrannosaur ever discovered from the late Campanian stage. The individual weighed approximately 4,700 kilograms, underscoring the immense size of this dinosaur.
Importance of the Discovery
The remains, found at the Carreras Pampa site, hold exceptional scientific value. Specifically, the dinosaur's tibia measures 84% of the length and 78% of the width of the tibia in the famous skeleton known as Sue. This highlights the substantial size and physical traits of this ancient predator.
Overall, nearly 18,000 individual dinosaur tracks have been identified at the Carreras Pampa site, left approximately 70 million years ago. This discovery opens up new avenues for studying dinosaur life during that period and provides valuable insights into their habitat and evolution.
This find is crucial for paleontology, as it allows for a deeper understanding of dinosaur evolution and their adaptations to changing environmental conditions. Research on large predators like this tyrannosaur ancestor helps scientists reconstruct the ecosystems in which they lived and comprehend how climate shifts and other factors influenced species development.
