Bat bites recorded in Sumy: how to avoid danger and what to do.
Bat bites in Sumy
The 'Sumy Regional Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine' reported that both cases occurred during attempts to independently drive bats out of their homes. The victims were prescribed rabies treatment.
Bats are looking for a place to hibernate
Experts reported that currently bats are looking for a place to hibernate, so they may fly onto balconies or into homes. Their bites are most often a reaction to stress or threat, as they are not inclined to attack first. If a bat flies into a home, it is important to behave calmly so as not to scare the animal. One should go to another room, call '112' or animal rescue services.
What is the danger
The Disease Control and Prevention Center warns that bats can carry the rabies virus, even without obvious symptoms. Infection can occur through:
- bite;
- scratch;
- saliva coming into contact with damaged skin or mucous membranes.
Without timely medical assistance, rabies in humans almost always has lethal consequences. The incubation period of the disease usually ranges from seven days to three months, but in some cases, it can last more than a year.
Animal bites in Sumy region
Since the beginning of 2025, 1356 people in the Sumy region have sought medical help due to animal bites. They were provided assistance to prevent rabies. Recall that in the Odessa region, cases of animal attacks on humans have increased. Over the week, more than a hundred residents sought medical attention. Earlier, Ukrzaliznytsia updated the transportation rules for animals on trains. They will make trips more comfortable. The appearance of bats in private homes in Sumy has caused outrage among residents who are trying to drive these animals away on their own. Preventive measures and vigilance regarding potential dangers from bat bites are extremely important for the city's residents.
