Doctors in Ukraine to Lose Deferment: Who Can Sign a Military Contract and How.
Ukraine Unveils Plan to Revoke Medical Workers' Deferment
According to Novyny.live: Ukraine has established a new procedure to revoke the military deferment of medical professionals, aiming to strengthen the Medical Forces of the Armed Forces. Health Minister Viktor Liashko stated that candidate selection for military service will be based on requests from the Ministry of Defense, with involvement from regional administrations. This process involves signing a one-year military service contract. Once the contract ends, medical workers will be allowed to return to their previous jobs. This initiative comes as Ukraine seeks to bolster its military medical capabilities amid ongoing conflict.
The current deferment revocation mechanism was developed following a decision by the National Security and Defense Council. The Ministry of Defense submits specific requests to the Ministry of Health for particular medical specialties and profiles needed to reinforce the Medical Forces. As Viktor Liashko explained,
“there is a certain identification of people who are ready, primarily voluntarily, to join the Armed Forces of Ukraine, specifically the Medical Forces.”
Changes Coming to the Ministry of Defense
Additionally, the Ministry of Defense is preparing reforms for territorial recruitment centers and military pay. The first details of these changes are expected to be announced in the coming weeks. These initiatives are designed to improve medical support efficiency and strengthen the country's defense capabilities.
The development of this deferment revocation mechanism for medical workers signals a stepped-up state effort to fortify military medicine amid the current security situation. Bringing medical specialists into the Armed Forces could significantly enhance the quality of medical care for both soldiers and civilians, especially during wartime. Moreover, upcoming reforms at territorial recruitment centers may positively impact the overall structure and operation of military conscription in Ukraine.
