Strikes on Russian Oil Refineries: A Growing Trend

According to Espreso.tv: In May 2026, Ukraine carried out a record 16 attacks on Russian oil refineries. Since the start of 2026, Russian refineries have been hit at least 194 times—an elevenfold increase compared to the same period last year. These operations are part of a broader Ukrainian strategy aimed at crippling critical infrastructure inside Russia.

Drone Data and Key Targets

Russia’s Ministry of Defense reported intercepting 63,933 Ukrainian drones in the first six months of 2026. In May alone, Russia claimed to have shot down 14,195 drones, with the number rising to 17,832 in June. Monthly totals for January and February remained below 6,000.

Ukrainian strikes have targeted not only refineries but also:

  • export terminals,
  • storage tank farms,
  • pipeline infrastructure.

This surge in activity reflects the intensifying conflict and could significantly impact Russia’s energy security and overall economy.

These developments signal an escalation in hostilities between Ukraine and Russia, with Ukraine increasingly focusing on strategically vital sites. The growing number of attacks suggests the conflict is entering a more active phase, potentially destabilizing the region further. At the same time, the rising effectiveness of Ukrainian drones and Russia’s active air defense efforts highlight an ongoing technological arms race in this aspect of the war.
