Russia begins attacks on Ukraine's railway logistics: what is known about the new tactics.
Attacks on Ukraine's railway infrastructure
According to ТСН: Since the summer of 2025, Russian troops have launched massive attacks on Ukraine's railway infrastructure. In recent months, Russia has been using Shahed drones and other unmanned aerial vehicles for targeted strikes on this infrastructure.
Military analyst Denis Popovich commented on the situation:
“With the installation of Starlink, their flight range is greater than standard. And it is now evident that they are trying to undermine the transportation of goods from the Polish border. Therefore, strikes are being made in certain directions.”
According to him, initially the Russians targeted railway facilities, particularly traction substations and nodes, but have now started attacking individual locomotives and warehouses. These strikes have taken on a complex nature: not only energy substations and locomotive depots are under fire, but also passenger terminals.
“They practiced this in the Sumy and Chernihiv regions. And now they have smoothly transitioned to the Zhytomyr region, where serious logistical problems may arise. The General Staff understands this, and certain counteractions will be implemented soon,” he added.
Recent events
In October, Russia dealt a massive blow to the railway in Odesa region, hitting a depot, which resulted in injuries to the train driver. There were also shellings of railway infrastructure in the border communities in the north, particularly in Konotop.
A passenger train and station in Shostka, Sumy region, were separately attacked. Chairman of the board of Ukrzaliznytsia, Oleksandr Persovskyi, reported that the enemy fired at two trains heading to frontline regions: the suburban train (Shostka – Tereshchenske/Novhorod-Siverskyi) and the long-distance train (Kyiv – Shostka).
Earlier, Russia also launched a comprehensive attack on railway infrastructure, resulting in delays of several trains in the Dnipropetrovsk direction.
Attacks on railway infrastructure in Ukraine continue to raise concerns. These actions not only threaten the safety of passengers but also complicate the logistics of goods transport in border regions. Given the current situation, it is important to monitor the relevant responses from Ukrainian military and state structures to ensure the safety of transport communications.
