Hungary Lifts Its Veto on €90 Billion for Ukraine: What This Shift Means.
Hungary’s New Government Signals Support
According to Espreso.tv: Roland Ceber, head of the Alliance of National Communities 'European Coalition,' has announced that Hungary’s incoming administration will back Ukraine’s European Union accession and end its blockade of compensation funds for EU countries supplying arms to Kyiv. According to Ceber,
“Hungary will not block Ukraine’s entry into the European Union”. He also expressed hope that
“Ukraine could soon begin these negotiations”. This marks a notable departure from previous Hungarian policy, which had stalled key financial and political support for Ukraine.
Unlocking Funds and Opening New Avenues
Under the leadership of Péter Magyar, the Hungarian government has ceased to obstruct the allocation of €90 billion to Ukraine. A critical decision involves lifting the hold on reimbursements to EU member states for weapons they have sent to Ukraine. This move unlocks over €40 billion in compensation for countries backing Ukraine. “Those nations that assist us with various types of weaponry, air defense systems, or military equipment will be able to receive funds from this facility,” Ceber stated.
Yesterday, the veto on the European Peace Facility was removed—a significant step in bolstering support for Ukraine and its allies. “We are watching such decisions from Hungary,” Roland Ceber emphasized, highlighting the importance of these changes for regional stability and cooperation among European Union nations.
These developments suggest a potential new phase in Hungary-Ukraine relations and a strengthening of European unity on security matters. By unblocking compensation for countries aiding Ukraine, this move could substantially enhance military assistance and foster greater stability in the region. As Ukraine pursues EU integration, Hungary’s backing sends a powerful signal to other Alliance members about the need for collective effort in this arena.
