Hungary Lifts Veto on Billions for Ukraine: Could Budapest Become a Negotiation Hub?.
Ukraine-Russia Peace Talks
According to UATV: Hungary is now willing to serve as a venue for negotiations between Ukraine and Russia. In a significant policy shift, Budapest has also dropped its objection to partially reimbursing EU members for military aid sent to Ukraine and is backing security assurances for Kyiv. Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar has signaled that Budapest is ready to host a meeting between the two capitals, a move that could help advance efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict.
The new Hungarian administration has lifted its veto on compensating roughly 40% of the cost of weapons already delivered to Ukraine. This decision could unlock the first tranche of over €6.5 billion from the European Peace Facility, funds that had been frozen due to Hungary's prior block. Notably, until 2023, Hungary consistently blocked these payments, creating a backlog of more than €40 billion owed to EU member states.
Security Guarantees and Support for Ukraine
Additionally, the first cluster of Ukraine's EU accession negotiations may officially open on June 15. Prime Minister Magyar emphasized that security guarantees can only come from the international community. He also expressed readiness to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy early next week, a potential step toward strengthening bilateral ties.
Support for Ukraine will remain a key topic on the international agenda, as French President Emmanuel Macron noted, stating that
“support for Ukraine will certainly also be at the center of our discussions.”These developments highlight a renewed diplomatic push to resolve the conflict and find ways to aid Ukraine in its pursuit of security and deeper integration into European structures.
Hungary's initiatives could significantly shift the dynamics of Ukraine-Russia talks, providing Kyiv with additional financial backing and a pathway to security guarantees. At the same time, cooperation with the international community and European nations may bolster Ukraine’s aspirations for EU integration, a crucial factor for regional stability.
