Ukraine Unveils Strategy to Reduce Electricity Shortages: Key Changes from June 30.
Ukraine’s Plan to Tackle Power Deficits
According to Espreso.tv: Ukraine’s Minister of Energy, Denys Shmyhal, has announced a new strategy aimed at minimizing electricity shortfalls across the country. The initiative outlines several steps designed to stabilize the national energy system, which has faced mounting pressure from infrastructure wear and rising demand.
Core Components of the Strategy
The plan includes the following key measures:
- Streamlining maintenance schedules for nuclear power units;
- Activating thermal generation equipment with a combined capacity of at least 300 MW;
- Implementing hourly power outage schedules across all regions of Ukraine starting June 30, from 17:00 to 22:00.
“Energy workers are doing everything possible today to ensure the stability of the power system. But how critical the situation becomes depends on each of us. Remember that responsible electricity use during peak hours (17:00-22:00) is a vital contribution from everyone to securing reliable power supply.”
Denys Shmyhal
Tasks assigned to relevant agencies and energy sector enterprises include:
- Optimizing repair campaign timelines;
- Completing emergency restoration work;
- Launching thermal generation equipment;
- Increasing the integration of additional capacity;
- Deploying energy storage systems to manage peak loads;
- Securing extra electricity imports from the EU;
- Addressing the expansion of electricity import volumes.
This strategy responds to ongoing challenges in Ukraine’s energy sector, particularly power shortages caused by aging infrastructure and heightened consumption. By implementing these measures, the country aims to reduce the risk of future energy crises and ensure stable service for consumers. Boosting additional capacity and optimizing electricity use are critical to maintaining grid reliability under increased strain.
