Ukraine to Impose Sanctions on Belarus for Aiding Russian Aggression.
Ukraine's Sanctions Against Belarus
According to UATV: Ukraine is preparing sanctions against Minsk for its complicity in Russia's war of aggression. This move follows confirmed evidence of military cooperation between Belarus and the Kremlin, which demonstrates the active role of the Lukashenko regime in supporting Russian military operations. The decision comes amidst heightened regional tensions, as Belarus has provided its territory and infrastructure for Russia's invasion. Separately, Vilnius is planning a formal protest concerning airspace provocations, notably after Vilnius Airport temporarily suspended operations on January 27 due to balloons launched from Belarusian territory.
Belarus's Role in Russia's Military Campaign
Latvia's Constitution Protection Bureau has also highlighted the Kremlin's control over Belarus, noting the country supplies ammunition for Russian weapon systems. According to available data, approximately 500 Belarusian enterprises are integrated into Russia's military-industrial complex, with Belarus annually supplying around 480,000 artillery shells and rocket munitions to Russian armed forces. These facts underscore Belarus's significant role in sustaining Russia's aggressive actions, which has drawn condemnation from its European neighbors.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that the Belarusian regime bears responsibility for Russian aggression, remarking that
“for now, Lukashenko's white poodle has been granted more rights than the people of Belarus, unfortunately”— Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
In turn, Ukrainian diplomat Andrii Sybiha noted that the current Belarusian regime is also responsible for Russian aggression. Furthermore, Kęstutis Budrys, a representative of the Lithuanian government, expressed hope that ministers would agree to additional criteria for the sanctions regime against Belarus.
Consequently, Ukraine is actively developing new sanctions against the Lukashenko regime in response to its complicity in Russia's war and provocations originating from Belarus. These measures are part of a broader strategy by Ukraine and Baltic states aimed at countering Kremlin aggression and supporting democratic movements within Belarus. Given the escalating regional instability, such steps could significantly impact the future political situation in Belarus and relations between Ukraine, Lithuania, and Russia.
