Acquisition of the SAMP/T System

According to TSN.ua: In 2023, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that Ukraine has taken delivery of the SAMP/T surface-to-air missile system. The system is set to undergo testing to determine its effectiveness in intercepting ballistic missiles, offering a new layer of defense alongside other modern air defense systems currently deployed in Europe. This development comes as Ukraine continues to face persistent aerial threats from Russian forces.

Volodymyr Zelensky stated: 'If we succeed with the French and manage to shoot down ballistic missiles, this will be the first such alternative.'

Expanding Domestic Defense Manufacturing

Kyiv is actively negotiating with international partners to secure additional air defense systems. A key focus of Ukraine's domestic defense industry is the development of next-generation ballistic missiles. The Ukrainian firm Fire Point is currently working on two models: the FP-7 and FP-9. The FP-7 missile has a range of several hundred kilometers, while the FP-9 is designed to reach distances of up to 800 km.

  • FP-7 missile: range of several hundred kilometers
  • FP-9 missile: range of up to 800 km

Notably, these new Ukrainian missiles are expected to cost half as much as the American ATACMS, making them a more cost-effective option for sustained use.

By acquiring the SAMP/T system and advancing indigenous missile technology, Ukraine is reinforcing its commitment to strengthening national defense in the face of ongoing military challenges. Collaboration with international allies, particularly France, opens up new avenues for improving air defense capabilities, which has become increasingly critical given the volatile security environment in the region. Furthermore, investments in homegrown missile systems could grant Ukraine greater autonomy in weapons selection and reduce reliance on foreign-made technologies.
