Ukraine suffers from a shortage of drivers: in which areas is the shortage most acute.
In the transport and logistics sector in Ukraine, the shortage of drivers due to mobilization is 25% of the demand, in the field of urban passenger transportation – up to 30%. These data were presented by the Deputy Minister of Community, Territorial and Infrastructure Development, Serhiy Derkach, during the presentation of a pilot project for training women truck drivers, as quoted by «Interfax».
«25% (truck driver shortage, – ed.) is a preliminary figure that we collected from carriers and logistics companies. In some companies, this figure reaches even more than 50% due to the mobilization question. In numbers, it's about 30,000 drivers needed as cargo transport drivers», – noted the official.
In the field of public passenger transport, according to Derkach, there is a shortage of about 30% of drivers – about 6,000 out of the 14,000 specialists needed in the industry.
The Deputy Minister noted that companies that have transport divisions in their structure independently train women who wish to work as truck drivers. The ministry and the Institutional Development Foundation, supported by USAID, are also implementing a project to train women truck drivers. Already, 100 participants have been selected from more than a thousand who submitted applications.
The project is supported by 25 large Ukrainian employers who are ready to hire women. Among them: «Ukrposhta», «Nova Poshta», Metro Cash&Carry, Novus, Fozzy, etc.
Additionally, registration for the pilot project for training women passenger bus drivers, She Drives, which has already been supported by 10 employer companies, has been extended. Women have already submitted about 200 applications to the project.
Let’s recall, the Ministry of Community, Territorial and Infrastructure Development is launching free bus driving courses for women. These courses from the Ministry of Infrastructure will cover several regions. More details about the new government project are discussed in the article by «Glavkom».
