Ukraine Cuts Ties with the CIS: Over a Hundred Agreements with Russia and Belarus Terminated.
Ukraine Severs Its Connection to the CIS
According to UATV: Ukraine is formally breaking away from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), canceling 116 agreements with Russia, Belarus, and other CIS members. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha announced the decision, explaining that shifting geopolitical conditions and the need to align national laws with current realities made this move necessary.
Andrii Sybiha stated: 'Ukraine’s treaty and legal framework must reflect the realities of war and the new security architecture on the European continent.'
He also emphasized his firm stance, declaring: 'As minister, it is my fundamental position to eliminate anything that could weaken Ukraine.'
A Gradual Departure from the CIS
It is worth noting that Ukraine had already stopped participating in CIS governing bodies back in 2018, signaling a steady retreat from the organization. The current termination of ties is a natural extension of that trajectory. The Ukrainian government continues to strengthen its sovereignty in international affairs, aiming to ensure security and stability amidst modern challenges.
This step marks a critical phase in Ukraine’s foreign policy, underscoring its drive for independence and safety amid growing threats from neighboring states. Severing links with the CIS and related pacts could further boost international support for Ukraine, especially regarding Euro-Atlantic integration and partnerships with other nations. It may also reshape Ukraine’s economic and political relationships with former Soviet republics, as the country pivots toward Western values and principles.
