Kyiv Demands Clarity from Allies on Air Defense Needs.
Ukraine’s Shifting Role in European Security
According to Espreso.tv: During the 'Eurointegration' program, PhD holder Bohdan Veselovskyi discussed how Ukraine’s position in European security is evolving and stressed the urgent need for international military assistance. According to him, a new political discourse on continental security has taken shape in Ukraine, reflecting a growing awareness of shared responsibility for maintaining regional stability.
The Call for International Support
Veselovskyi emphasized that Ukraine urgently requires interceptor missiles for Patriot systems, as well as air defense systems from Germany and Italy.
“We are stating clearly: this is what we need,” he said, underscoring the importance of transparent communication regarding the country’s security requirements.
He also highlighted that Ukrainian drones can now reach targets as far as Saint Petersburg—a distance of one thousand kilometers. This capability, he noted, signals Ukraine’s growing military potential. Since early 2023, strikes on Russian military sites and infrastructure have become more frequent, including:
- On May 21, a fire erupted at an oil refinery in Syzran;
- On May 23, attacks targeted oil infrastructure near Novorossiysk and the Metafrax chemical plant in the Perm Urals;
- On June 3, 2023, Saint Petersburg itself was hit by drone strikes, resulting in a fire at an oil terminal.
“Ukraine is strong, Ukraine is simply making a request: 'Help us with this and that, so we can clearly know where we are headed,'” Veselovskyi concluded, highlighting the need for international support as the global security landscape shifts.
His remarks underscore the critical importance of international cooperation for ensuring security in Ukraine and across Europe. Military backing from Western nations could be a decisive factor in strengthening Ukraine’s defenses amid ongoing aggression. At the same time, the evolution of Ukraine’s military technology—such as its drone capabilities—points to a changing national strategy that may reshape regional stability. These developments make it all the more vital for Ukraine to clearly communicate its needs to secure the necessary support from the international community.
