On January 19, President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree on new sanctions from the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine. This was reported by the President's Office.

Sergiy Karyakin, a chess player, became one of the individuals under sanctions. He was born in Simferopol and spent his childhood in Donetsk region. In 2009, Karyakin changed his citizenship to Russian.

Karyakin publicly expressed support for Russian aggression against Ukraine and visited Ukrainian territories occupied by Russia.

In March 2022, FIDE suspended Karyakin for six months for his support of Russian aggression. After that, he stated that he would compete in international competitions only under the flag of Russia.

Among Karyakin's achievements are his victories at the FIDE Cup (2015), the title of runner-up in the World Chess Championship (2016), World Rapid Chess Champion (2012), and Blitz Champion (2016).
