Germany continues to support Ukrainian refugees

In 2024, Germany continues to provide significant support to Ukrainian refugees who arrived in the country after the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. According to OBOZ.UA, about 1.1 million Ukrainians live in Germany, over 350,000 of whom are minors. This figure has slightly decreased compared to the peak value of 1.143 million, as about 80,000 people left the country by mid-February 2024.

Previously, Germany showed the number of refugees from Ukraine who work and live on benefits. It turned out that only 22% of able-bodied migrants are employed.

Since the beginning of the year, there have been significant changes in the social support system for refugees. The amount of monthly payments increased by 12%, which is a substantial raise:

  • Currently, single adults and single parents receive 563 euros (about 25,861 hryvnias) per month.
  • For adult citizens, this amount is 506 euros (23,248 hryvnias).
  • Teenagers aged 14 to 17 are entitled to receive 471 euros (21,597 hryvnias).
  • Children aged 6 to 13 – 390 euros (17,883 hryvnias).
  • The youngest, up to 5 years old, – 357 euros (16,370 hryvnias).

Special attention is paid to supporting schoolchildren. In 2024, payments for school supplies also increased by 12%. In the first half of the year, each schoolchild will receive a one-Time payment of 130 euros (5,961 hryvnias), and in the second – 65 euros (2,980 hryvnias).

It is important to note that Ukrainian refugees in Germany receive financial assistance on an equal footing with citizens of the country. This support is provided under the Bürgergeld (citizen's allowance) program, which is intended for the basic provision of individuals seeking employment. Germany guarantees the right to receive state support to everyone who finds themselves in a difficult situation and cannot support themselves.

To enter Germany, Ukrainians, as before, do not need a visa. It is enough to have a biometric international passport, an ID card, and a birth certificate will suffice for children. During the first 90 days of stay, registration is not mandatory, but after this period, it is necessary to either apply for temporary protection status or leave the country.

Despite significant support, some Ukrainians still leave Germany. According to available data, about 321 thousand Ukrainians have already left the country, although it is unknown how many of them returned to Ukraine and how many went to other countries.

Recall that earlier Ukrainian refugees who just arrived in Germany were told where to go and how to get benefits.
