Ukrainians in Poland will have to take a language proficiency test: what is important to know and how to prepare.
Starting from July 1, 2025, new requirements for knowledge of the Polish language will be introduced in Poland for foreigners living in the country. Now, obtaining citizenship, a long-term EU resident card, and admission to police schools will require a certificate of passing a state exam or the TELC exam. The Polish Linguistic Institute has shared tips and recommendations for preparing for these exams.
There are two main formats for the exams: the state exam and the international TELC. The state exam consists of five modules, lasts two days, and is necessary for obtaining citizenship and the EU residence card. On the other hand, the TELC exam can be taken more frequently and can be used for university admission or obtaining an EU residence card.
Preparation for exams, tests
During the state exam, the focus is mainly on grammar, while the TELC has a 'Language Elements' module, which is simpler. The oral part of the exam differs in format - an individual performance in the state exam and a partner performance with another candidate in the TELC.
To successfully pass these exams, it is important to prepare properly. Monika Sembida emphasizes that without preparation, it is difficult to pass the exam successfully, as clear structure and stress management are required. It is recommended to attend preparatory courses and take an online test from the Polish Linguistic Institute.
Starting from July 1, 2025, foreigners wishing to obtain citizenship, EU residency, or enroll in police schools in Poland must have a certificate of passing the state exam in the Polish language. This will be a mandatory requirement that will help ensure a high level of language proficiency among foreigners in the country.
